The housing market’s strength in the face of general elections
Why it’s doubtful the general election on 4th July will affect anyone’s moving plans this year
Surveys have shown that approximately 95% of prospective movers claim the upcoming election will not change their plans. Judging by historical data, market productivity will probably remain steady and healthy as we move towards the election date of 4th July this summer.
Home movers have confronted many different kinds of challenges, both economic and otherwise, since the pandemic began back in March 2020, which is why more prospective movers than ever are stubbornly determined to make good on their moving plans this year, despite any upcoming political changes to the economic legislation.
Two of the last three general elections (including the most recent one in 2019) have shown that the market did indeed stand resilient and strong against the elections, both before and during, and in certain cases there was actually a dramatic increase in market activity once the elections were over. 2015 saw consistent buyer demand going into the election, and then witnessed a climb during the month after, increasing by 18% when compared to the year before in 2014. Likewise, the 2019 general election saw a 13% annual increase in buyer demand, before then climbing to 14% the following month.
Although every general election can be different, the historical data indicates an especially strong summer ahead of us regarding the housing market, particularly if the interest rates start to fall. This might, however, depend on any important housing policies and legislation that may be introduced.
